Frequently asked questions.

What is Redline in Email?

Redline in Email is Draftable's breakthrough Outlook add-in that enables legal teams to compare and track changes in email messages without leaving Outlook. It eliminates the need for manual markups, giving legal teams the power to redline emails like they redline contracts, directly within their everyday email platform.

You can get access to the Redline in Email feature in Draftable Legal, the document comparison solution built for lawyers.

Do I need to leave Outlook to use this feature?

No. Redline in Email works seamlessly within your existing workflow. You can compare emails directly from the email. No need to switch tools, copy content into Word, or reformat anything manually.

Who is this feature for?

Redline in Email is built for legal professionals at all levels:

  • Junior lawyers benefit from seeing exactly how their drafts are revised.
  • Senior lawyers can collaborate and coach faster.
  • Knowledge teams and legal ops can standardise review workflows.
  • IT teams can deploy it easily as part of firmwide tooling.

How do I redline an email in Outlook?

When you’re replying to a colleague’s email and making changes directly in their draft, such as updating terms or responding to a request for inline revisions, you can easily redline those edits before sending.

1. Hit Reply and make your changes in the email body.

2. Click the Draftable icon in the Outlook ribbon.

3. Select "Redline My Changes" to highlight the differences.

4. Preview the tracked changes, then Apply to embed the redlined version into your response.

5. Send it directly, or copy and paste into a new email if preferred.

Ideal for:

• Providing transparent revisions during contract negotiations

• Offering feedback while maintaining full visibility of what changed

How do I see what's changed in an email?

When a colleague replies with updates but hasn’t marked up their edits, Redline in Email helps you identify what’s changed instantly.

1. Open their reply and hit Reply.

2. Click the Draftable icon, then choose "Compare Against Earlier Email".

3. The add-in will automatically detect the last email you sent and run a comparison.

4. Review the tracked changes in the sidebar preview to see exactly what was modified.

Ideal for:

• Catching unmarked edits or silent changes

• Quickly reviewing revisions without scanning line-by-line

How does this help with coaching junior lawyers?

When a junior lawyer sends a draft and a senior makes edits, it’s often unclear what changed. With Redline in Email, juniors can see line-by-line edits and learn in real-time, making every review a coaching opportunity.

Is it secure?

Yes. We are ISO27001 certified and as we specialise in document comparison for large organisations, we can cater to teams with obligations around privacy and security.
